Reports are coming in that a second surprise attack was launched on our armoured spearhead by the enemy.
A small strike force of escorted fighter bombers attacked our boys at approx 1400 hrs .yesterday
Although the alarm was raised to late, our lads were ready this time , getting the message to our waiting RAF interceptors.
Our brave fighters were quick to react and raced to assist.
During the intense aerial fighting several enemy aircraft were shot down before being driven off with only minimal losses to our own.
Reports of a second escort wave proved correct but the enemy fighters turned tail when challenged .
Our armoured spearhead continues unchallenged ..

Saburo Sakai led a large squadron toward a group of US aircraft. He realized that the enemy was led by Pappy Boyington and Joseph Foss.
Saburo had learned a valuable lesson during their last engagement and ordered his squadron to focus on the lesser skilled pilots. One skilled Zero pilot didn’t follow his orders and was quickly out maneuvered by Pappy and shot down.
After many minutes of manuvering the Japanese pilots were able to run Pappy and his remaining Corsairs off the table. Joseph was left to take on the remaining squadron of Zeros by himself. He chose to flee the skies After sustaining multiple hits. A victory for Saburo and his squadron with minimal losses.

An RAF Spitfire II drove off a snooping BF-109. The Spitfire pilot was sure of a kill, but there was no confirmation. The Spitfire continued on its patrol – flying high cover for supply ships making their way to the invasion beaches of France.

***Attack on HMS Warspite Thwarted***
HMS Warspite came under attack from elements of the remaining Luftwaffe presence in Normandy recently. The ship, which was carrying out strategic bombardments on key Axis defensive positions was attacked by three FW190’s. The Warspite’s flak batteries, while not scoring any direct hits, did enough to ensure that the Luftwaffe’s strafing runs were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile three other FW190’s engaged an Allied combat air patrol with one of the German planes peeling off in a failed attempt to attack an RAF Spitfire which was on spotter duties for the Warspite.
One Allied plane was lost in the engagement although the pilot was later recovered from the waters and is understood to have declared himself ready to return to active service.
