US Rangers vs Heer Ostruppen
A small elite Force of US Rangers & other infantry tried to force passage of the Normandy beaches through a pair of German held bunkers & their vastly outnumbered defenders.

Early fire from the foremost bunker’s MG team halved one US infantry squads, whilst the Ostruppen dug in on the far side of the beach inflicted surpringly heavy casualties with their MG & rifles on another US infantry squad.

The US troops brought up 2 flamethrower teams to deal with the first bunker & another to engage the valiant Ostruppen. The Ostruppen held longer than they were ever expected too, especially after the bunker was neutralized & stormed by the US forces, but finally broke & ran.

The 2nd line of Heer defences whittled down the delayed advance of the Rangers (having broken the basic infantry squads) but a flamethrower team broke through & drove off the 50mm anti-tank gun crew, before being gunned down themselves by an undermanned MG team (which itself had survived an artillery hit & sniper fire). The other US flamethrower ran out of fuel & withdrew.

As time ran out the 2nd line bunker still stood firm & the outnumbered defenders whispered “Mein Gott” & collapsed at their overheated weapons. They had survived one more day in Normandy…

Following the Airborne’s coup de main capture of the Caen Canal bridge they faced fierce and determined counterattacks throughout the course of the day by the 21st Panzer Div. The lightly armed Paras were in real danger of being pushed back on to the bridge itself until the timely arrival of Lord Lovatt’s Commando troop swung the fight in their favour.
