Following the Airborne's coup de main capture of the Caen Canal bridge they faced fierce and determined counterattacks throughout the course of the day by the 21st Panzer Div. The lightly armed Paras were in real danger of being pushed back on to the bridge itself until the timely arrival of Lord Lovatt's Commando troop swung the fight in their favour.
